Hi, I’m Alejandro and I’m staying at Karen’s house in Ionia, Michigan. On July 1st, Flor, Karen, and I went down to the local market in Lansing, where you could find a lot of goods such as fruit from many countries. I actually bought a mango, which is not that typical from here. There were also many spices and dried fruits, but the difference was that in these places everything was way more organic than in a regular local supermarket. There was even a souvenir place where they sold teddy bears with the clothes of local teams, or even stickers and puzzles with Michigan motifs.
Not long after we arrived, Karen told us that anything we bought there we could eat in the «picnic area», so we picked up some salad — but in my case, I put roasted chicken and bacon bits on it, so I kinda ruined it, jajaja. Also, they grabbed a lemon cake because they weren’t that hungry. We didn’t have drinks, so Flor offered to pick up some and she surprised me with a handmade Coke, which wasn’t bad actually. It looked like a beer, and we found that really funny.

I forgot to say that to get into the picnic area we needed to pass between many plants and flowers that were also on sale. Back to what I was saying, the picnic area was in front of a lake where, surprisingly, there were no fish swimming around. We couldn’t finish all the food, so we took it home.

After this, I went with Karen’s grandkid, Miles. Surprisingly, one of his friends found a toy basketball set on the side of the road, so we played basketball for a while. Those teens were much bigger than me, but I managed to score some points and win a couple of games with my team. After playing, they all asked me many things about both my trip to the USA and my country, Spain. They wanted to know what I wanted to see here or if I’d been in their country before, which I said no — and that’s why I was so excited.

Miles drove me to a fast food restaurant because they wanted me to try every kind of food. The food they ordered was cheese bites and salty fritters with Coke that had a scoop of vanilla ice cream inside. The truth is that it was really nice and tasty, but we couldn’t talk much more because it was starting to get late and I needed a bit of sleep.
It was a really fun and surprising day, full of new things, new flavors, and great company. I feel like I’m learning so much about life here in Michigan, and I can’t wait to see what the next adventure will be!
