DISCOVERING THE ENGLISH RIVIERA: MY ACTIVITIES IN TORQUAY. Martina de Mercado

This week has been awesome so far!! During this time I’ve done many different activities and I have met not only my family, which I liked a lot, but also, so many incredible people from all around the world. Even though I have so much to tell, what I’ll focus on today will be in the activities I’ve done and the places I have visited, because I really enjoyed them and the landscapes here are really beautiful.

The first day, to get to know the city a little better, we did a tour around Torquay. They showed us the most important places of the city: the different monuments such as the statue of Agatha Christie and her dog; the harbour, which is very beautiful and emblematic of the city, and they also showed us the meeting points we were going to need for our adventure here. In the afternoon I also had a great time, we went bowling  and I started to get to know everyone in my group better. I had never played before but I loved the experience.

One of the activities I found most useful was the Trail Quiz. It is a game in which you are given some clues and what you have to do is to answer them by looking for places around the city and taking pictures in different places. It was really helpful that our group leader Claudia was there because she helped us not to get lost in the city and took the pictures we needed to win the game. Also, this activity, which was very fun, and in which I learned new English words, it helped me to know my way from home to school and to get to know the different streets without needing the help of ‘maps’.

It’s really cool because not only do we have activities in our village, but we also go by bus to do activities in neighbouring villages. One of them was the water park in Paignton. Although the weather is not always good, we were lucky that day because it was sunny and we could enjoy all the slides without being cold. We had a great time and, as there were people from there, while we were waiting, my group and I started talking to the local people and we practiced our English and our British accent.

On Saturday we are going on our first trip to Exeter! I am very happy and excited about all the activities I have left to do with the friends I have met here and, what I am sure of, is that if they continue as they have been, these three weeks will be amazing and I won’t forget them.
