A month in Michigan, USA: My American Summer adventure

Hello! My name is David and I’m 15 years old. I’m from Madrid, Spain, where I live with my family. I’ve been to the United States before, but only for holidays. That’s why I was really looking forward to this trip—it’s a whole new experience to live here for a month with a host family and be part of their daily life.

I’m staying with a host family in Michigan for a month, and this is what my experience has been like so far: I’m really enjoying my days in the United States. My host family is formed by Tim, the father, Connie, the mother, and two dogs named Shadow and Hiddie.

Connie and Tim work as police officers and they like to go camping in their camper, so we’re spending six days in Yankee Springs, the place where they keep their camper. A couple of their friends, Beth and Jim, also have a place here and they’re really nice too.

During this break, my host parents have to work in the mornings, so I can sleep in. I have my breakfast and then I go to a public restroom to take a shower, wash my face, and brush my teeth. After that, Connie and Tim arrive and we go with their friends to the lake near the campground. They have a big boat and we spend some time out on the water. We swim, I try to get a tan, and I also just sit on the boat seats and relax.

Around 6 p.m., it’s dinnertime. One day we ordered pizza and ate it on the boat. Then we go back to the camper, where we make a campfire, sometimes roast marshmallows, and then we go to sleep.

This trip has been a great opportunity to discover how people live in another country. I’ve learned to enjoy the little things, like sitting on a boat, sharing meals outside, and talking around a fire. I feel really thankful to my host family for making me feel welcome, and I’ll take these memories with me when I go back to Spain.
